Places to stay/Hotels
Finding a place to stay is not that difficult in Bangkok, it just depends on what you want. Are you a backpacker than go to Khoa San Road. This is the backpackers main street in Bangkok and the place is filled with cheap hostels where you can spend the night for a couple of 100 bath. Make sure you see the room first though since some of them might be really bad but in general its a good place to stay for the budget traveler with cheap travel and other services widely available. A disadvantage however is that Khoa San is not really central and therefore has no access to the Skytrain or MRT stations. In order to get somewhere you have to take a bus or taxi. During the high season from December to February you better not be picky and take the first room that is available.

Hotels
Giving you an advice on hotels is almost impossible since it depends on your budget and wishes. Prices range from 600 to 10000 Bath. The most important is that you choose one that is either close to a location were you have to be a lot or one that is close to a BTS or MRT station since traffic can be really bad sometimes. A popular hotel and suitable for most Tourists is the Asia Hotel next to Ratchathewi BTS station. Rooms are around 2000 Baht a night and the big shopping malls are within walking distance. For a great dinner check out the hotels next to the river, they all have a buffet with food from all over the world, Shangri La hotel for example has a too elaborate buffet with Thai, Indian, Mongolian and Western foods, reserve a table though since these places are popular. Take a look at the different options and decide for yourself:

Apartments
Planning on staying longer? Better get an apartment than. As with the hotels, there are a lot of good ones to choose from. A good room is available from 10000 up. Boss Tower for example on Rama 4 offers 31m2 rooms with bathroom and double bed for 12000 bath a month. It is serviced meaning you get cleaning three times a week. Furthermore there is a swimming pool and room service. This is still rather expensive though, therefore it's really worth to take a look around before you decide, often buildings with just a little bit less facilities are a lot cheaper. You don't need a swimming pool or room service than rooms from 6000 bath are available to you. If you're coming with a group I can recommend "Evergreen" at Ratchathewi BTS station. Very nice apartments with a living room and two bedrooms. If you stay here with 4 people you can divide the 50000 bath rental fee a month by 4. Also ostudio's available. If you're on a tight budget and want to stay for a longer period of time you should take a look at apartments where the people are mostly Thai. There are rooms that go for as less as 3000 bath a month! Don't expect much luxery for this price as the rooms often don't even have a window but at least you got a place to sleep.
